Vernon won its third straight BCHL championship with a 5-4 win over top-seeded Powell River on Tuesday. The Vipers swept the series against the Kings and will move on to the Doyle Cup against the winner of the Alberta JHL championship (Spruce Grove currently leads Camrose 3 games to 1).

John Knisley scored 3 goals and had 3 assists in his 14 playoff games, which included a 3rd-Star performance in game 3 when he scored the game-winning goal unassisted.

Smooth Operator To Cornell

Eric Sade (6' 0", 175), a 1994-born defenseman from Washington, DC has committed to the Big Red for the 2013 season according to U.S. Hockey Report. Eric is reportedly a solid defense-oriented player with a physical edge, excellent quickness and skating ability. USHR cites that Eric is an outstanding multi-sport athlete who was a member of St. Albans record setting 4x100 meter relay team.

Eric scored 3 goals and had 27 assists in 59 games with DC Caps' U18 (midget co-op between Washington Little Caps and Team Maryland) team this season. DC was the AYHL regular season champion. Eric is expected to play in the USHL where he was selected by Des Moines in the USHL futures draft last year.

Other schools reportedly in the running for Eric were New Hampshire and Princeton.

Playoffs Picking Up

The CHL has concluded its regular season and Cornwall finished in second place behind Pembroke. Kevin Cole returned from a lengthy injury break to play in the Colts' final 8 games. Cornwall begins its quarterfinal series against Kanata on Thursday.

In British Columbia the league moves into conference semi-final play on Tuesday when Vernon opens up against Westside on Tuesday, while Victoria visits Powell River.

Dias Named POTW

Madison Dias was named the BCHL's Player of the Week for the week which ended February 27th. Madison scored three goals and added four assists in Victoria's first two games of its opening series against Nanaimo.

Joel Lowry picked up honorable mention for the award by scoring two goals and picking up five assists in the two games.

The Grizzlies lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game four is Tuesday in Nanaimo.

Victoria Kick Starts Playoffs

Victoria got off to a blazing start in its opening series with Nanaimo scoring 6 goals in the middle frame on its way to a 9-1 win of Friday. Joel Lowry scored a goal and added three assists to pick up the game's 1st-Star, while Madison Dias scored two goals and pitched in with a helper to receive the game's 3rd-Star.

Game 2 is at Bear Mountain on Saturday.

Cimetta To Cornell

Chris Heisenberg has reported that Matt Cimetta (5' 10", 180), a 1995-born defenseman with Elgin-Middlesex Midget Minors has committed to the Big Red for 2013 or 2014. Matt has scored 24 goals and picked up 41 assists in 56 games for the Chiefs this season. Matt has also played a game with Sarnia (GOHL) as an affiliate this season.

Matt has previously played with the Lambton and Honeybaked programs.

This is Matt's OHL draft year so that will bear watching this year.

BCHL Preps For Playoffs

The BCHL regular season is over.

Vernon is the 1st seed in the Interior Conference and has received a bye into the second round. John Knisley completed his first season in the BCHL by finishing tied for 12th among rookie scorers.

Victoria is seeded 4th in the Coastal Conference and will face Nanaimo in its opening series beginning Friday. Joel Lowry finished tied for 16th in the league scoring race despite missing 18 games. Joel finished tied for first in points per game among players active in at least a third of a team's games. Madison Dias also had a strong regular campaign and finished fourth in scoring among his fellow Griz.
